RICHARD LOFTON

MYTHOS
PAN WITH PIPES
BATTLING CENTAUR AND MINOTAUR
CENTAUR ink on paper
Lofton's early study of anatomy and his love for classical Greek myths inspired a recurring interest in mythological subjects. They appear in numerous oil paintings and ink and graphite drawings, sometimes on very large paper. Nymphs and satyrs danced joyously together. The god Pan played his flute contemplatively. Later in his life, he did a series of paintings with india ink on paper with brush. These are very energetic, bold and loose, giving life to battles between minotaurs and centaurs. Lofton's abstract work also has a mythic quality, as though to remind us of the significance of each thing, each moment.
