Lofton painted many commissioned portraits throughout his life.  In later years, he did a series of portraits of artists, sculptors, cartoonists and photographers who were his friends, purely for the joy of it.  These are some of his most vibrant and expressive works. Earlier in his life, Lofton did a series of paintings of Gullah people he knew and grew up around in coastal South Carolina. These reflect his appreciaton and love of these strong, beautiful people.
